The Treadmill
Case study of how an animated illustration was done.
The initial concept was drawn in ProCreate. Illustrations were made in Adobe Illustrator & animated in Adobe After Effects.
Explored the ideas by scribbles in procreate.
Turned scribbled ideas into a clear concept.
Illustration process of the treadmill, Tool: Illustrator
Character illustration break-up.
Used strokes for animating parts (hands & Legs)
Kept parts as individual layers, planned to animate a single leg and duplicate on the other side, so finalized the character with one leg to export.
Animation
Imported into After effects & chose “Retain layer sizes” from options.
Created vector shapes from the imported AI file.
Animation of leg
Leg & shoe were combined as an induvial comp.
Used Path deforms to animate the leg’s running motion, then the shoe was animated manually with keying, trim paths were used on animated stroke layer to create Socks & Bottoms.
The layer was duplicated & repositioned layer on the timeline to make a motion cycle.
Motion to hand
To make a fluid animation, added a little bounce to the hair & overall character.
A simple stroke was animated to make the treadmill run.
